Next weekend, Silver City and the Mimbres Regional Arts Council will host the 6th annual incarnation of Pickamania: a free weekend of some of the best bluegrass, folk and traditional acts in the country, with some Southwest talents if you're craving local flavor. The weekend kicks off with a foot stomping, kilt lifting street dance, sponsored by the Silver City Food Coop.

I volunteered to set up and help out with the Kick-off Dance last year.  The Food Coop blocks off the last segment of 6th street that dead ends at the Big Ditch, so there is ample room for the audience and a crowd of dancers.   I had so much fun volunteering at the Street Dance that I jumped at the opportunity to sign on again this year.

Last year the crowd gathered quickly as the music started and stayed to the last minute at the Street Dance, urging more and more encores from the band. Even though I was working I had a great time. Everyone else was dancing and applauding, hooting and hollering. True to their street performer name, The Dusty Buskers had stepped down off the stage and were interacting with the crowd – they really knew how to get a crowd hopping! They are a very engaging band!

This year, the Food Coop is sponsoring The Out of Kilters, a traditional Irish music band from Tucson, AZ, for the Kick-Off Street Dance.  Now, as an O’Bryan, I feel duty bound to enjoy this event! And, I suspect that we will have another great turnout, and another crowd that is reluctant to call it a night.

If you work up an appetite and thirst dancing, the Food Coop is open extended hours until 9:00 PM on Friday the 12th to serve attendees. There will also be fresh hot popcorn.
